Down in Room 128, a buzz of activity can be found: girls trying on dresses and jewelry, and boys trying on ties and suit jackets. Sequoia High School’s Prom Gallery has been held for the past 30 years, started by a parent volunteer who wanted to help students who didn’t have the money to pay for prom’s expensive outfits by offering them for free.
The Prom Gallery has evolved immensely over the past 30 years. Once, the gallery held Conference room A and B and at one point, Room 150. Now, in Room 128, there are two inner rooms with mirrors for dressing rooms. For shoes, there is a wide array of heels, flats, and mens dress shoes. Additionally, the gallery has underwear, ties, purses, and even makeup.
Now, the gallery is led by Alvria Macias, who works in the family center and runs this project alongside other parent volunteers.
“It started very small. One of her goals was, whenever students walk in here, there’s no judgment. They can choose whatever they want. They just wanted to make them feel amazing and feel part of the school.” Macias said.
Different organizations and people donate to the gallery, and this year, it allowed for more availability for men’s outfits.
“I just enjoy seeing the students come in here with their friends, find something, and look so beautiful. Just watching them find a treasure here truly brings me joy,” Macias said.
This truly is a wonderful event that helps so many students, especially those who cannot afford the expensive attire that encapsulates prom. By the end, at least 200 dresses are gone, along with several pairs of shoes and makeup items. Stop by today and check out the gallery’s last hurrah!
