On Thursday, May seventh, 2026, Nintendo of America announced that it would be releasing a Nintendo Direct about ten minutes before it was supposed to air. This came as a surprise to many, especially because of the game it is focusing on.
Star Fox is a beloved franchise that originated on the SNES in 1993 with “Star Fox,” and roughly eight games have been released since then. However, at least two of these games have been remakes of the original: Star Fox 64 (N64), Star Fox 64 3D (3DS), and Star Fox Zero (Wii U). These games have updated various qualities of the game, such as graphics, voice cast and gameplay.
The most recent release in the Star Fox franchise is “Starfox 2,” which was initially supposed to be released as a direct sequel to the original game on the SNES system, but it was never actually released. It instead came out on the SNES Classic system, released to keep gamers satisfied during the gap between the Wii U and the Switch.
While exploring space, players will encounter many different and diverse planets, some teeming with life, some completely deserted and polluted and even a star. Depending on how well they complete certain objectives, the route through the Lylat system will be different. New cutscenes were also added, along with all-new mission briefings between missions to get to know the characters better, with a whole new prologue scene that shows what happened to Fox’s father. And lastly, there will be an online mode with up to 4 players, where players can choose to play as Team Fox or Team Wolf.
The core gameplay will involve taking to the skies for spatial and atmospheric combat in an Arwing, equipped with lasers, charged attacks, and bombs. Other parts involve taking the landmaster for ground combat and the blue marine for oceanic combat. The game will also feature a first-person mode while flying along with Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. The new 2-player co-op mode will have one player controlling the ship, while the other controls the lasers and bombs. Some of these gameplay updates will also apply to ground and sea combat.
Star Fox will be a much more updated version of the previous installments. The game’s graphics will look gorgeous, with an almost-realistic aesthetic, and will feature updated models for Fox and his crew, Star Wolf and his crew, and the main villain, Andross. These new models will make the characters look more animalistic. There will also be updated voice acting for Fox and other characters.
Overall, Star Fox will be a great choice for hardcore fans of the series and newer fans who want to get deeper into the franchise. However, it will only be on the Nintendo Switch 2 and a physical version of the game will cost $70.00, whereas digital versions will cost $50.00. This game will be released on June 25, 2026.
