The newest IB Economics coming to Sequoia next school year is more than just a regular economics class, it’s a course focused on understanding the world as it happens.
Mr. Bustos, who teaches government, economics, multimedia and IB Theory of Knowledge, describes IB Economics as a practical and as a current-events-driven course designed for students who want to understand the issues of the world in 2026 and beyond.
Unlike other social studies classes that focus heavily on the past, IB Economics centers on present news. Students will regularly watch and read current events, and analyze issues happening locally in Redwood City, across California, throughout the United States, and globally.
One major topic students will explore is the housing market, especially in the Bay Area. Discussions will include housing prices, housing shortages, rent control and affordable housing. Since housing directly affects students and their families, the class brings a connection to everyday life making students feel welcome.
According to Mr. Bustos, one of the most valuable skills students will gain is the ability to analyze and understand the news.
“Students will be able to pick apart the story and understand what is happening in the bigger picture with supply, with demand, with business, with the government. Students will be able to start to predict the consequences of actions happening right now in today’s world,” Bustos said.
Instead of just reading headlines, students will learn to understand the bigger and real meaning behind them.
Mr. Bustos believes IB Economics will help students realize they are not powerless. It teaches them that the choices people make in the economy matter, and that understanding how things work allows them to make a real difference.
