Since its launch on Sept. 1, 2006 Roblox has undergone many updates throughout the years. Some of these changes were animations in 2007 or the Ticket to Robux change in 2016 and most recently, the mandatory age checks for users who use the chat feature.
Despite age verification being optional for basic gameplay, it is needed to access and use the chat features as an attempt from Roblox to protect kids from sexual predators.
While the chat ban has placed significant barriers between predators and children this has received some significant backlash in many aspects, such as the facial recognition forced checks in order to use the chat and people not being able to talk to their friends due to the inaccuracy of the facial checks. Even though facial recognition has been a thing since Nov. 2025, it has become fully enforced in order to use the chat feature in early Jan. 2026.
Although age restrictions for the chat feature are done to protect kids, it has affected many players who like to chat with their friends while playing or simply just giving a positive comment to others. In response to the age restrictions, freshman Joshua Leon feels they aren’t completely accurate, for instance placing people in the wrong age groups of players. The groups are broken up into under nine, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20 and 21 and over. Based on the results the app gets from the facial recognition, they then place players into these age groups of people from similar ages to use the chat with. In addition to this, groups are not all fully accurate with some stating that they are placed in the wrong groups and not being able to text people of their same age group.
“[Some ways they could improve is] by changing their age groups, maybe putting people in the right category so people can actually talk to their friends and not with older people,” Leon said.
Aside from age restrictions not being fully accurate, Leon feels that it has helped by keeping a healthy environment while playing.
“Some games out there [are] really toxic, and the community is really bad, so preventing [people in those games from accessing the] chat is really nice, you even feel [that] you’re safe in the game, you feel like yourself,” Leon said.
Although according to wired.com, Roblox has claimed that players’ personal information is “deleted immediately after processing” the age verification check, people are still hesitant to go through with it. Some of the main causes people are reluctant to go through with facial recognition are fear of getting their identity and data stolen. The main cause of this fear comes from the doubt of where their data is supposedly going, which leads to people being afraid of being tracked or misidentified.
“[I fear that my] identity is going to be exposed, that people are going to come to the school or to where I am and know where to find me, [what] I look like I [feel] vulnerable that someone [is] going to come and kidnap me or something,” Leon said.
Although people have negative views on the age restrictions, there must be protections in place for younger players. These restrictions are needed to prevent kidnappings and other incidents. For instance, one of the most recent disappearance being of 15-year old Thomas Medlin who disappeared Friday, Jan. 9 rumored that he was going to meet up with someone he met online through Roblox. According to the Suffolk County Police Department he left on Jan. 9 and took a train from Long island to NYC and is still currently missing . Despite this Roblox has come out in a statement in which they said that they are “deeply troubled by this incident” and “working with law enforcement to support their investigation.”
In response towards people getting kidnapped or disappearing after meeting people through online games or apps, some apps still don’t change their policies about chatting or texting. Freshman Oliver Rava feels that some restrictions in the chat feature are necessary to keep young players safe.
“I think the chat was being used in weird ways, but I think there were other ways they could have stopped it. I think it was a weird thing to do spontaneously” Rava said
Looking back towards the forced age verification checks for players in the game needed in order to use the chat has caused people to become displeased with the results due to players being misclassified. Based on many reports made by players according to some of these reports there are 23-year-old’s being classified as teenagers meanwhile other adults found themselves restricted to 13-to-15-year-old chat groups. Due to this miscategorization players have started to feel uneasy due to this, one of these players being freshman Gisela Quinteros who has been in an awkward situation due to the miscategorization going on.
“I’ve joined a game and it requires voice chat, and it’s more on the older category, like 15 and up, and since I was in the category, I joined [the] game where it was voice chat, and I spoke to a lot of nine year olds [that] were in that category, and it did not fit well [to] us,” Quinteros said.
