Upon the final whistle ravens soccer found themselves in a draw of 1-1 against a strong woodside team at 4pm on Wednesday afternoon.
The game saw a quick start and both sides saw chances at goal on numerous occasions. It wasn’t until late into the first half where Woodside scored on a tap in cross in front of the goal. Sequoia would later equalize the score with a goal from Senior Alexander Kodl assisted on the play by Senior Mike Alvarado. Sequoia took control at the end of the game and produced multiple shots on target but none could find the back of the net. Going into the game, Sequoia was prepared for a tough opposition.
“Woodside is a very strong team. They’re very quick and aggressive, and it’s always a physical game. Our main objectives were to lock them down and capitalize on our opportunities,” Sophomore Eamon Aldous said.
All throughout this season the Sequoia’s formation has suffered from injury leaving an impact on the team’s scoresheet. However in these struggles players have really taken a step forward. Junior Darcy Cross has filled in for injuries at the left back position and Sophomore Eamon Aldous has recently been called up varsity to bring depth to the midfield. Even in a tie the ravens played a quality game creating multiple chances at goal throughout the afternoon.
“I think we played really well. Woodside is a really strong team, and we were able to get a tie. We could have gotten the win, but you know, it’s not bad.” Aldous said.
At the beginning of the year sequoia saw some speedbumps in their team’s production. This game was a good step in the right direction. Spectators took notice of this as well.
“I thought they played really well. I thought they hadn’t played this well so far at the beginning of the season, so it was really cool to see them doing so well now,” Sophomore Massimo Ramezane said.
Rebounding from a tough start to the season, Sequoia soccer looks to the future with confidence.
“We’re on a good streak right now. We just won last Friday at South San Francisco and a tie against Woodside is good. Even if we hit some bumps in the road, this team has shown they can rebound from that and play good soccer,” Aldous said.
