WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
“Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake” is an HBO exclusive spin-off series following the genderbent versions of the widely beloved Finn and Jake from “Adventure Time”. Fionna and Cake were teased in the original series, but only lasted 4-5 episodes, leaving fans wondering why they were never brought up again.
On August 17, 2023, the trailer for the first season of Fionna and Cake dropped on YouTube, gaining 2.1 million views since then. The first season follows Simon Petrikov as he stumbles into Fionna’s world—which is mundane, as she struggles with stability— travelling the multiverse in search of getting his partner.
Massing a major fan base, many hoped the show would return again for a second season.
Then, to the fan’s excitement, a trailer for the second season dropped on October 13, 2025 on YouTube, gaining 1.2 million views since then. The first episode aired on October 23, 2025 and the last on December 24, 2025.
After the events of season one, Fionna struggles with navigating her new world, relationships and trying to be herself again. While Huntress Wizard is trying to find an antidote for a wounded Finn, she ends up entering Fionna’s world, desperate to return back to the magical land of Ooo.
The second season has been more controversial than the first, with a lot of people online disliking “Episode 8; The Insect That Sang,” and how the writers began to portray Fionna. In the episode, she breaks up a relationship, which creates a rift with her friends, leading her to destroy her friend’s home in a fit of rage. While others defend the episode’s writing, believing it to be an accurate reaction to life events, the controversy was alarming, especially following the overall positive audience response to season one.
The season finale “The Bear and the Rose,” received a much more positive fan response, with many fans finding it to be the most emotional episode of the season. However, controversy still sparked, with some being unappreciative of the plot twist ending in which Huntress Wizard returned and revived Finn at the last second, believing it to be a cheap writing choice to keep a nostalgic character alive.
The second season’s most successful aspect was found in its writing of older characters. This season expertly added context to past characters with lacking screen time in the original series, or even in the first season. Characters from the original series such as Huntress Wizard, Fern, and the Cosmic Owl were given more extensive screen time, allowing fans to learn more about the once unknown characters.
Another impressive quality of season two is its homage to the original series, while still giving new content and originality in the spinoff. The once one dimensional universe and its characters are now flourishing in a new light, for a new generation.
Although controversial in the fan base, I would say this season is undeniably successful and enjoyable. The once nostalgic “Adventure Time” is now new and exciting, with fans everywhere hoping for the third season, continuing the story of Fionna and Cake.
