On Friday, August 30, Sequoia students came together to celebrate the beginning of the school year with a tailgate party located on the soccer field.
The event was a first of its kind at Sequoia and kicked off at the beginning of the football season.
“[The tailgate] is an opportunity to relax, forget about the classroom for a second and have fun. [It’s the] first home football game [and] even if you’re not a football fan, it’s a social event,” director of student activities Corey Uhalde said.
There were a variety of activities including a book bike provided by the Media Center and two food trucks.
“There’s a lot to do. We have trivia over there, we have cornhole and Spike Ball around. I think there’s a lot of places where you can interact [and] I think it’s pretty good,” ASB member Mira Lowitz said.
The tailgate was also intended to bring together the community and showcase Sequoia’s various sports.
“We, at Boosters, support all sports teams, so it’s really important to us to have all sports teams present and represented. So when I got to look around and I saw kids were there from [so many sports teams] it warmed my heart to be very honest with you,” Boosters Vice-President David Taylor said.
The Boosters program has proposed the idea of repeating the Tailgate event during other seasons.
“We called it ‘Fall Sports Kickoff’ for a reason, because what we’d really like to do is make this multiple times throughout the year […] So when winter sports start [… we could] get everybody out to support the teams and recognize them,” Taylor said.
This tailgate marked the beginning of what could become a new tradition at Sequoia.
“We’re constantly trying new things, and when we find something that people enjoy and have a good time, it’s certainly our first thought to go back to that again in the future,” Uhalde said.
