Baseball seniors honored as team drops close game

Sequoia baseball celebrated their seniors Wednesday, May 4 before losing a contested 2-1 game against the Carlmont Scots. Seniors Babak Amerian, Justin Blau, Blake Carbonneau, Blake DeTata,  Jonathan Kelly,  Max Michelini, Mike Michelini and Renic Sloan were recognized before the game in a senior ceremony.

Sequoia’s starting pitcher, Kelly, cruised through the first two innings, giving up no runs. In the third inning Kelly ran into trouble as Carlmont strung a few hits together as well as drawing a walk that set up Scots senior, Andy Cross, with a RBI opportunity. Cross capitalized, hitting a 2-run single, giving the Scots a 2-0 lead.

The Cherokees rallied back in the bottom of the third inning, getting back one run after putting together a few hits, capped on a sacrifice fly hit by sophomore Kasi Pohahau.

Kelly was pulled in the fifth inning and finished with outing of four innings, five hits and two earned runs. After scoring in the bottom of the third inning, the Cherokees threatened in the fifth and sixth innings ended up leaving runners on base. The Scots starting pitcher, junior Sean Prozell, pitched a complete game, scattering six hits over seven innings of one run ball.

The Cherokees’ 2-1 loss puts the varsity’s overall record at 18-8 (6-7 PAL), keeping them in 4th place in the PAL Ocean Division. Sequoia will play their last regular season game, a rematch against Carlmont, at their home field Friday, May 6 at 4 pm.

“As for our last game of the year, Carlmont games are a little more special than other games. Its got the rivalry factor,” head coach Corey Uhalde said. “I hope that [our players] show up and I hope they treat it like it is the most important game of the year.”
